Mechanism Lab

Auction theory and matching markets, running live. Every bidder on this floor is an algorithm playing its equilibrium strategy. Change the rules and behavior changes with them.

Sealed-bid auctions

Each bidder draws a private value from U[0, 100], known only to them. In a second-price auction, bidding your true value is a dominant strategy. In a first-price auction, honest bidding guarantees zero profit, so rational bidders shade down to (n−1)/n × value. Run one auction to watch it, or 500 to see whether the seller should care which format they pick.

Gale–Shapley deferred acceptance Nobel 2012

The algorithm behind medical residency matching and school choice. Applicants propose down their preference list; positions hold their best offer so far and reject the rest. It always terminates in a stable matching: no applicant–position pair would rather dump their partners for each other. Step through it round by round.
